In this page I will try to describe all
my behavior management ideas. I do have several ways to reward and
give consequences for behaviors the students use. Click on any

Class Room Rules
1. Respect
yourself
2. Respect
others.
In the past I have allowed students to brainstorm and create their
own list of rules. However, when we did this we ended up with
a huge list of 10 or 12 things!! I felt that this is too
lengthy for students to remember and that would make them more
difficult to implement! Now we brainstorm all the things that
are respectful and discuss how most everything falls under these two
rules. I hope (and think) they can remember just two!!!
I send home a Parent
Letter in the beginning of the year that covers all of my discipline
expectations. If you would like to see a copy of this letter/
packet click here.

Tracking Student Behavior
I know several of several different methods where students turn
cards or add strips to pocket charts or move clips. I have
tried many of these and have found the one that works best for me.
Last year I made a large chart in Excel with students names down the
left side and across the top all the behaviors and work habits
from our Friday Folder. Students are aware that if they
misbehave I will "give them a check." I always carry the
clipboard whenever we travel, when are at lunch or in specials.
For each check students sit out five minutes of recess. On
Fridays I send out Friday folders and simply count the checks.
0 checks= S+
1 check= S
2 checks=S-
3 checks=N
4 or more= U
Students get a letter
grade for conduct and work habits. This is much easier for me
to keep track of. Also, I can file these charts away for any
future reference or parent conferences.

Letting Parents Know
About Behavior
Every week I send home a Friday Folder. This folder has school
flyers, parent information, notes from the teacher ,student work and
a behavior and work habits check list. I fill this out every
Friday morning and send it home. Students must bring it back
by Tuesday morning. I DID NOT create this- this is something
that has been floating around the school for awhile.

I also send home notes for misbehaviors, call and email. If a
student is toeing the line I also call that parent and have the student
tell why I am calling. Kids really don't like this and usually
shape up quickly. However, I *try* to also send home notes for great
days, too. At the beginning of the year I try to write each
parent a positive note about their child. It really
helps make the next note or negative parent contact much smoother.

Positive Rewards
I try to "catch students
being good." Whenever I catch a student doing the right thing
I give them a carnival ticket. On Fridays students can use
these tickets like money to buy things from our class store.
Often when I see several students misbehaving, I find one student who
isn't misbehaving and very vocally give them a ticket. That
often settles students down. Sometimes if the whole class is
behaving I give a "class ticket" where everyone in the class has
just earned 1 ticket. I keep a tally of class tickets on my
behavior clipboard. I buy the tickets in large rolls from
Party City or order them from Oriental Trading Company for a very
reasonable price. Click
here
to see these tickets.
Here is a list of the things in my class store:
3 tickets- 1
piece of candy from the candy box
7 tickets- 1
Homework pass
10 tickets= Lunch
with a friend
15 tickets-
Treasure box
150 tickets-
Pizza party after school with two friends

Whole Class Positive Reward
If the whole class is behaving I give a class ticket. If
someone else compliments the class on their behavior they get a
letter toward the word COUGARS (our school mascot is a cougar).
Once we have spelled the entire word COUGARS, we have 10 minutes of
extra recess.

Whole Class Negative
Consequence
At the beginning of the day I write the word recess on the board.
If the majority of the class is not behaving then I erase one letter
of recess. If we lose the entire word, then we lose recess.
Sometimes I take away 10 minutes of recess, sometimes the entire
time. I do not like to use this too often because there is
always that child who behaves and listens and is wonderful and they
end up getting punished. However, I will say it gets the
class's attention when I say, "We have just lost a letter of recess.
I need friends to _______." Once again, I try not to use this
too often.

Attention Getters
Sometimes it takes a little work to keep your classes attention. I
have several attention getters I use.
-
I ask for students to
"Give me five." When I say " Give me five." students put
their hands in the air, are quiet, still, ready for directions and
are looking at the teacher. We practice this in the beginning
of the year and students know this is our class signal to get
attention and for the class to be quiet.
-
Sometimes I play
"Teacher Says" which is played exactly like "Simon Says." Students
love this and usually begin playing immediately. All I say
is "Teacher says touch your nose. Teacher says clap twice."
and so on......
-
I say quietly "If you
can hear my voice clap once. if you can hear my voice clap
twice. If you can hear my voice clap three times." By
the third time you have everyone.

How to Inform Parents
I send home a parent packet at the beginning of the school year.
The parent packet has my behavior management plan. Click
here to read that section of my packet. To see the whole
packet, click on Tips for Teachers button on the main page and look
at the beginning of the year section.
